Each person in this world has its own peculiar genetic code of DNA. Due to which, no two people can have the same fingerprints, which is the basic need and main working principle in fingerprint based attendance system. This attendance system distinguishes among two fingers on the basis of valleys and ridges of fingerprint.

The main component on the circuit is finger print module. This module sends signals or commands to the internal controller after matching fingerprints. Further, signals received by the microcontroller were stored in the internal EEPROM to mark the attendance. There is also a keypad on the circuit board to enroll the new person or to exit from the screen prompted the texts related to the received commands.

Components that were used in manufacturing fingerprint based attendance system’s circuit are

  • keypad (3×4)
  • Fingerprint module of any variant (R305 is very common)
  • AVR microcontroller development board (optional)
  • Single pi connecting wires
  • Adaptor (of 12V & 1Amp) or 7812 voltage regulator or powerful DC battery
  • Atmega8 microcontroller
  • 16×2 alphanumeric LCD
  • RS232 serial cable.

Working of fingerprint based attendance system circuit

Initially, light up the AVR development board. Then, with the help of the serial cable, execute the codes into the microcontroller. During code burning, confirm slide switch is set to the programming mode. At the end of the codes burning, turn off the power supply and remove the serial cable. After doing all this, now you can connect the circuit which will show “biometric attendance system” on the LCD. Few seconds later, LCD shows three options- attendance, save and clear. For marking the attendance, person need to press one (1) on the keypad. It will take the person to the attendance module where attendance can be marked by placing finger on the screen or LCD. If you want to enroll a new person, you need to press two (2) from the keypad. It will take you to the new command window where you can save new person’s details like fingerprint, name, age, password etc. Finally, to clear all the data, you can press option three (3) on the keypad.

Applications of fingerprint based attendance system circuit

  • This type of attendance system can be used in factories, educational institutions, research centers etc.
  • Can be used in ATM booths for authentication purposes.
  • Can be used in access control systems.

No doubt, fingerprint based authentication technology is a boon in this modern world, but it also has few limitations. This technology can also be misused by putting fake fingerprints. Modules used in such systems are very sensitive so they must be handled very carefully in order to avoid any internal circuit damage.
